The information in 'PCS to Corporate America' absolutely guided my shopping for business attire. I am very interested in fashion, and using the book I was able to find suits and dresses that really suited my style AND looked professional. Looking forward to your entry on women's interview clothing!

Dave, I agree. When I worked at Cisco Systems, it took me almost a year to learn all the lingo not just in the high tech industry but the language unique to Cisco. I hope you are doing well in your new company and wish you all the best success. Thanks for being a reader of the Cameron-Brooks blog!

Rob,

This is an excellent point. I would also add that, in most jobs, it will take you three to six months just to learn the language/lingo of that business. Similar to learning the language of the military (not to mention the acronyms), when a new development candidate comes on board, it is similar to moving to a foreign country and trying to communicate. I'm one year into a new position with a telecommunications company where "engineers" may not have a college degree and CZT IIs are my customer facing employees. I am dealing with ethernet, fiber builds, cable sheaths, binder groups, DSL, ADSL (multiple variations), SDSL, IPIDS, and it goes on and on.
My advice, similar to yours, is to sit back and breathe. Learn how to communicate throughout the organization up, down, and sideways. Spend time to learn your organization and your business. Contribute and be successful in your job. Position yourself to advance based on success, not bluster and bravado.

Thanks Joel,

I don't curse, but I'm sure I need a little help in keeping things more formal. Words like "awesome" are definitely part of my vocabulary. I just hope I won't be too stodgy while I try to shape my language. It's hard to walk the tightrope between personality and professionalism. I guess that's where preparation comes in!

Great article Joel! First impressions are critical in every aspect of life and poor vocabulary will give the perception of a lack of intelligence and maturity. I always try to carry myself as someone who I would want to have on my team.
